How to Get a Format That Looks Good in a Resume Template

How to Get a Format That Looks Good in a Resume TemplateResume templates are great ways to get an idea of what your prospects look like. It's true that you can get a true feel for how a resume would look by simply reading it over, but there are actually a lot of things that make a good resume much more attractive than just a blank page of paper. But before you set out to do the work of creating your own resume, there are a few things that you need to keep in mind.First off, you want to do what you can to make sure that your resume is at least somewhat comprehensive. This means that you should not only think about how your resume will fit the job you're applying for, but also how it will be used in hiring managers. A great example of this is the assumption that companies usually only look at a resume when they need to hire somebody. Therefore, it's important that you write a resume that addresses both of these situations. The standard format for resume is one that is split into two par ts. The first part is called the 'In-Depth Job Description' and the second part is called the 'Curriculum Vitae'. These are often referred to as the 'cover letter'assignment' sections because they are the parts that a company can read from the resume. The way that you go about formatting them is pretty simple:Cover Letter - This is the part that includes all of the necessary information about yourself that your prospective employer will be looking for in the first place. Make sure that it's unique, so that your readers will be more likely to remember it.Curriculum Vitae - This is where you get to fill in all of the details that relate to your experience in the past. These can be anything from a specific job you held to any skills that you have. This section is where you give specific examples of where you have made an impact on the job. Make sure that the information in this section is relevant to your job.The format of your resume is something that you have to take seriously becaus e it will affect how you are viewed when you apply for other jobs. While a job posting may not include any form of resume template, most of the time when you're applying for a job in a company you will be asked to fill out a form. You want to make sure that you do your best to make sure that it looks as professional as possible. That's it for this quick tutorial on resume templates. Hopefully this information has given you some tips on how to create a resume that looks the best.

Epic Founder Judy Faulkner Richest Female Tech Billionaire

Epic Founder Judy Faulkner Richest Female Tech Billionaire Judy Faulkner hates high heels. Stockings too. “High heels hurt,” she told The Capital Times. “Stockings â€" stockings are probably like ties. They constrain your thinking.” Faulkner discussed the issue during a long interview in April at the headquarters of Epic, the Wisconsin-based electronic healthcare records management company she founded in 1979 when she was in her mid-30s. Today, Epic has 9,000 employees and annual revenues of $2.5 billion, and the 73-year-old Faulkner is worth $2.6 billion according to Forbes. That makes her one of the top 10 richest self-made women in the U.S. Though she’s hardly a household name, Faulkner is America’s wealthiest self-made woman in tech, with a net worth slightly higher than Hewlett-Packard CEO Meg Whitman ($2.5 billion). Why has Faulkner remained fairly unknown? Until recently, she rarely granted interviews, preferring to focus on building Epic. But lately, healthcare becomes politicized, and control of the marketplace has been increasingly being fought in public, so Faulkner has felt compelled to talk more to the media. “It has to do with our growth in the industry,” she told HealthcareITNews last fall. “When we were smaller, it was fairly easy just to stay below the radar and concentrate simply on ‘Are we developing good software? And are we doing a good job with our customers?’ That’s how life was.” Now, healthcare has become “more of a media battle than a quality-of-products and quality-of-services and support battle,” Faulkner told HealthcareITNews, and she understands she must discuss a wide range of issues in public, sometimes even including how she thinks uncomfortable office attire can affect workplace productivity. A New Jersey native, Faulkner has spent her entire adult life in Wisconsin after enrolling at the University of Wisconsin to pursue a master’s degree in computer science. She and her husband have lived the same Madison subdivision for the better part of three decades, and she drives around in a five-year-old Audi. She recently joined wealthy philanthropists like Bill Gates and Warren Buffett by signing the Giving Pledge and promising to bequeath her assets to foundations upon her death. Faulkner got her start after taking what she says was one of the country’s first-ever computers-in-medicine courses at UW. The decision reflected her interest in both medicine â€" her mother was a co-winner of the Nobel Prize Peace Prize for her work with the Oregon Physicians for Social Responsibility, and her father was a pharmacist â€" and tech. “Math is truth and computer science is what works. It’s great to put them together because you need both,” she told The Capital Times. Faulkner says she grew up as a “nerd,” and credits the advent of Microsoft for making life for people like her easier. “It was painful to be nerdy when I was growing up and I clearly was nerdy,” she told The Capital Times. “But I think it became a perfectly fine thing to be nerdy after Bill Gates.” Faulkner founded what was then called Human Services Computing, in 1979. At launch, the only employees were two assistants, in addition to the founders. For a tech company based in the Midwest, growth was initially modest. Eleven years after its founding, the company, which by then had changed its name to Epic, still only had 30 employees, according to the International Directory of Company Histories. But it had already captured some major clients, including the Harvard Community Health Plan, the Ontario (Canada) Ministry of Health, and a 490-bed hospital constructed by the Sultan of Brunei. Epic’s bookkeeping software was being used by approximately 100 hospitals in Asia, Canada, and the United States. One of the company’s biggest turning points was when it rolled out a Windows-based electronic medical record (EMR) product called EpicCare. Through word of mouth, and thanks to the growth of Windows itself, the product became the industry standard. By 1997, according to the Directory, Epic had net income of $6.6 million on sales of $30.9 million, and EpicCare was officially the nation’s largest electronic medical records system, with some 18,000 licenses sold. Epic attributed more than half of its revenues to EpicCare in 1997, the Directory says. As it expanded into more and more hospitals, revenue hit $162 million in 2003, the year Epic “stunned the industry,” in the words of the according to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, by landing the Kaiser Permanente contract. Even as Epic’s value soared, Faulkner steadfastly refused to take the company public or accept a buyout. She has also become known for creating an atmosphere that combines grueling hours with unabashed geekiness. Today, the Epic campus in Verona, Wisc., contains a Harry Potter-themed buildings, an Indiana Jones-styled hallway, and a treehouse. For the company’s annual client meeting group, Faulkner is known for dressing in costumes â€" including Supergirl, the Mad Hatter from Alice in Wonderland, and a Harley-Davidson biker. At the same time, there have been grumbles about Epic’s corporate culture. These have manifested themselves in a series of class-action lawsuits challenging the company’s overtime pay rules. In fact, one of these suits will soon be heard by the Supreme Court. The overtime disputes are perhaps the outgrowth of Faulkner’s own extreme work ethic. Employees say that Faulkner is always willing to stay up and work all night to get tasks completed, and she expected others to do the same. “There may be some people who work as hard as Judy,” Epic co-founder John Greist told The Capital Times. “But I’m pretty sure there’s nobody who’s worked harder.”

3 Reasons Why Being A Copywriter Is A Smart Career Move - Work It Daily

3 Reasons Why Being A Copywriter Is A Smart Career Move - Work It Daily There’s one thing you CAN’T stand: boring content. And you’re not alone. In a day and age where “content is king” and attention spans are short, it’s more important than ever to understand how to capture and keep a reader. Otherwise, you’ll lose them to someone else. Related: 3 Ways To Kickstart Your Creative Career If you have a way with words and you have an interest in marketing, copywriting might be a smart career move on your part. Why? There are plenty of reasons why you should consider becoming a copywriter. Here are three major ones: 1. Copywriting skills are in-demand. With more and more companies turning their backs on traditional “yell and sell” advertising strategies and moving toward inbound and content marketing techniques that focus on content, copywriting is an extremely in-demand skill set. According to the Content Marketing Institute, 70% of B2B marketers are creating more content than they did one year ago. That means more and more companies are looking for and hiring copywriters to create this content. Someone has to craft copy that attracts and keeps customers! Why not you? 2. You don’t need a formal education to become a copywriter. While many have leveraged an English or Marketing degrees as a starting point to their copywriting career, getting a formal education isn’t necessary in many cases - especially if you plan to freelance. So, what can you do to supplement your lack of formal education? Here are a few ideas: Start a blog and contribute to it regularly Get tips and feedback from successful copywriters Look into online training programs All of these things will help you hone your copywriting skills. Don’t let your lack of formal education keep you from pursuing your passion for writing! 3. You have the freedom to work from home or in an office. As a copywriter, you have the freedom to choose whether you want to work from home or work in an office. Many other professions don’t have this luxury. So, if you love having the flexibility to choose when and where you want to work, copywriting is a role you should consider for sure. Fight against boring content. Become a copywriter and use your passion for writing to inspire readers to keep reading! Why the Fight for Paternity Leave Is So Important

Why the Fight for Paternity Leave Is So Important Im Fighting for Paternity Leave So Should YouFighting gender inequality in the workplace includes letting fathers to be fathers.Earlier this month at Women Deliver, one of the worlds largest conferences on gender equality and womens rights, I welches part of a team that made an announcement. The topic paternity leave. To some, that may seem surprising. Why talk about dads at a conference for women? The answer is simple. Supporting men as caregivers is a necessity for gender equality. In the not-too-distant past, businesses were built on a Mad Men model. The presumption welches that women will stay home and do all the caregiving, while men stay at work. That way of thinking helps explain why the United States leise has no national paid maternity leave. The thought process behind it is that the man will make the money, while the woman stays home. (For mora on this, see my opening remarks at a U.N. event.)Unfortunately, the structures tha t keep those old ways in place, including workplace policies and cultures, still havent been rectified.Today, most businesses have some paid maternity leave, usually covered as disability leave following a birth. But despite some progress in recent years, only 29 percent of U.S. businesses offer paid paternity leave. And while unlike the United States, virtually all other countries offer some paid maternity leave, fewer than half offer any paid paternity leave. It gets worse. Even when paternity leave is available, numerous forces prevent men from being able to use it in its entirety. This brings us to the Women Deliver conference, which took place in Vancouver. Dove Men+Care a company I partner with on this issue and Promundo released the State of the Worlds Fathers report, packed with data from interviews with more than 11,000 men and women. The findings show just how big a problem this is.The overwhelming majority (85 percent) of fathers across seven countries want more time at ho me to care for their new children. But paternity leave often pays only a fraction of what men make at work and after welcoming a new child, families are particularly strapped financially. Forty percent of parents say financial barriers are the biggest impediment to paternity leave. The stigmas against taking it are also powerful. Majorities of women and men say attitudes among colleagues and managers often leave dads feeling unable to take their paternity leave. This is a topic I covered in depth in my book, All In. Men have been fired, demoted, or lost job opportunities for taking paternity leave or requesting a flexible schedule.I explored this in the wake of my own battle for fair parental leave. When my wife was pregnant with ur third child, we determined that Id be needed at home for caregiving after the birth. The policies I was under at CNN, part of Time Warner, allowed any parent 10 paid weeks after having a child except a biological father who had his baby the old-fashione d way.I challenged this internally. After our daughter was born prematurely in an emergency and the company refused me the 10 paid weeks, I took legal action. Ultimately, the company revolutionized its policy, in a win-win for parents and for the company itself.Businesses benefit from making paternity leave a reality not just officially in policy, but through a culture of supporting men in taking the leave. Its proven to attract and retain employees and increase gender equality in an organization. After all, as long as men are prevented from caregiving roles, those responsibilities will fall more on the shoulders of women. Theyre pushed to stay home more, while men are pushed to stay at work more, and the macho cycle continues. To help paternity leave become a norm at businesses everywhere, Dove Men+Care has partnered with Deloitte, Women Deliver and Promundo to create a Paternity Leave Global Task Force. Its aim is to identify and promote solutions that will result in improved acce ss and uptake of paternity leave for all men.Announcing this plan at the conference, Women Deliver President and CEO Katja Iversen called the effort a no brainer. Alan Jope, CEO of Unilever (Dove Men+Cares parent company) said the commitment to paternity leave is so important because everybody wins moms win, dads win, and the kids win.Its time to put the Mad Men era behind us once and for all. For that to happen, businesses must embrace modern fatherhood. Todays dads are as committed to caregiving as moms are. Lets make sure they get a chance to be there, from day one.The fight for gender equality affects company culture. Uni or TAFE

Uni or TAFE Uni or TAFE?Posted November 1, 2013, by Jo MesserI didnt get the marks to get into uni. Is TAFE a good alternative option?Amanda, 18TAFE is a great stepping stone if you dont get into university straight from Year 12. Depending on what course you are doing and what your ultimate career goal is, it could be an even better option than university. The learning environment of TAFE is more focused on ensuring students gain practical skills for work. If you prefer to be more hands-on in your learning then TAFE could be a good fit. The other advantage of going to TAFE is that it can be an easier transition from high school to tertiary study. Class sizes are generally smaller and there tends to be more personal contact with teachers. At TAFE, qualifications are certificate I, II, III or IV, diploma and then advanced diploma. Completing a qualification may take one to three years, depending on what course you are doing. You can build on your qualifications as you go and there a re exit points along the way. Make sure you have a look at The Job Guide to review the qualifications needed to work in the job or area you are interested in. TAFE tends to offer predominantly vocational courses that prepare students to work in fields like building and construction, aged care, community work, office work or trades whereas university caters to more professional white-collar careers such as law, medicine, academia, research, consulting or general business. The good news is that many institutions are now dual-sector, so they have both TAFE and university courses, and many TAFE courses can act as pathways into university degrees. For example, a Diploma of Nursing can be a pathway to a Bachelor of Nursing likewise, a Diploma of Business can segue into a Bachelor of Business. So even if you didnt get the marks to enter uni now, it could still be an option down the track with the help of a TAFE course.Jo Messer is a Career Development Specialist who has many years of ex perience in supporting and guiding students and graduates of some of Australias most respected universities, as well as mature-aged clients, across all facets of their career. How to Overcome Age-Based Excuses

How to Overcome Age-Based ExcusesHow to Overcome Age-Based ExcusesFocus on the future - elend the past - to overcome the age-based excuses mature job seekers often tell themselves.Mature job seekers still face challenges that do not usually concern younger job seekers. So what can executives do to turn age into an asset instead of a liability? Well, putting your focus on the future, and off the past, is the first step. Here are some of the issues that Ive heard in my years coaching and some suggestions on how to overcome these common age-based excuses job seekers tell themselvesI have an MBA - from 1989.Never stop pursuing knowledge, continued education and professional development. Without some current educational accomplishments, that degree you got 20 years ago and $1.00 will get you nothing more than a cup of coffee. The changes in business paradigms, technologies and strategies are evolving at warp speed. Go back to school. Take educational seminars. Do independent research. P articipate in industry training programs. Do whatever it takes to stay up to date in your profession. Demonstrate that knowledge through a detailed presentation in your resume or portfolio. They wont pay me what Im worth. This is a touchy issue that creates enormous controversy. I wish I had a buck for every time an older executive said to me They wont hire me because of my age and compensation level. They wont pay me what I am worth. Instead of a sign of age discrimination, this may be a signal that its time to freshen your bona fides. While the executive may have earned significant income in past years, if his experience and education are out of date, and if the market demand has changed, then he must adapt or lose out to other candidates. Keep up-to-date with tactics to overcome the seniority sticking point.Ive been in the business for 25 years and won awards for the turnarounds Ive had a hand in.Many believe that because they did great things in the past, they should continue to b e rewarded for those accomplishments now and in the future. Reality check It doesnt work that way. You cannot rest on your laurels. When seeking a position, do not focus on the past. Rather, create an extraordinary value proposition for what you can do for a company now. Communicate your vision on emerging trends, opportunities and challenges. Show you can be the solution to a companys problems.Industy events are too draining on my time. You should be active in industry associations, trade shows and symposiums. Notice I said active. Simply being a member in name does absolutely nothing for you. Literally as I was writing this article, I got a call from a prospective client. I mentioned I was speaking at an association meeting in his industry. His comment was, I stopped going to those when I was a young man because they were too draining on my time. Guaranteed, he will face age discrimination. Another way to demonstrate you are contemporary is to give industry presentations. The prese ntation does not have to be on a nationwide level. It could be to your local association chapter. Getting published is also a winner. An article published online or in a local association newsletter can demonstrate you are active and current within your industry. You go from being an expert to being an authority, and you will be sought out. Reference these presentations and activities in your resume, and your age will no longer be a factor.Im familiar with Outlook and the Internet. The explosion of computer technology and the Internet is part of our life. It is not enough just to be familiar with the programs that meet your day-to-day needs. Rather, show that you are state-of-the-art through your knowledge and application of new technologies and methodologies. Not sure where to start? Heres a guide to social-networking and job-search etiquette online.I have to tell you this story. I recently spoke with a self-described HR guru and change agent. In our discussion, I asked for his Link edIn address and told him I would send him an invite. He indicated he was not on any social networking sites and thought they were nothing more than a waste of time. I almost had a heart attack. I advised him how social-networking sites are an awesome resource for recruiting talent, networking with colleagues, participating in industry groups, researching trends, consulting with experts and so on. He was dumbfounded and just didnt get it. Guaranteed he will face age discrimination. Some contemporary companies even have executives responsible for encouraging employees to be actively involved in social networking to build brand loyalty and create a contemporary corporate culture. Get connected, or you will be disconnected.Im herunterkommen and informed on trends.Be contemporary. Too many mature professionals stick with old habits. If you are not contemporary in your appearance, you will be perceived as not being contemporary in your ideas or knowledge. Get rid of the horn-rimmed glass es ties that are too narrow too wide or out-of-style and suits, shirts or blouses that dont fit and are worn and frayed. If you look sharp, you will make a positive, energetic impression in the interview.Youre probably looking for someone younger, but I know I can do the job.Nothing beats enthusiasm. Dont talk about your grandchildren. Talk about mountaineering, or the marathon you ran, or the tennis tournament you entered, or the college courses you are taking, or the article you just wrote for your industry trade journal. Avoid age issues. For example, dont make the following statementsIm looking for one more challenge before I retire.Back when I was your ageIm 57 years old, but a young 57.Rather than bringing up age issues, you should focus on the needs of the organization and how you can produce results. Further, if an organization discriminates based on age, it will likely discriminate for a multitude of other reasons. You do not want to go to work for that kind of organization .The job seeker who can demonstrate state-of-the-art expertise with energy, enthusiasm and a zest for living will have many, many years of a productive career. Age discrimination should not be a factor.
