10 Reasons Your Small Business Needs a Small Aircraft
10 Reasons Your Small Business Needs a Small Aircraft10 Reasons Your Small Business Needs a Small AircraftNo, not a geschftlicher umgang jet. A small airplane. When we think of a business aircraft, we usually think of an ultra-luxurious business jet. But for most small businesses, a jet is a bit overkill. You dont need a Falcon 5X or a Bombardierlong-range jet to get the job done. There are numerous small aircraft that will do the same job for a lot less of an investment. Take the Cirrus SR22, for example.Or a Beechcraft Baron. Or a Pilatus PC-12. Even the venerable Cessna 172. Depending on your specific travel needs (and, lets face it - your desire to look cool) you could definitely save time and money with a small business airplane. But be careful- owning an airplane can result in a slight (er enormous) obsession with aviation. If you have a small business with employees or customers in a variety of locations, a business aircraft might make sense. But it doesnt need to be fancy. A fo ur-seater aircraft can still usually get you places quicker than an airliner and is almost always faster than driving. And if you do want to make an impression with your airplane, there are a number of small airplanes that are simple and practical without sacrificing comfort and luxury. Do you think you need a business aircraft? Here are a few reasons you might. 01Make It to Business Meetings QuickerGetty Images/MGPIf youve ever had the desire to learn how to fly, and you own or manage a business, then maybe its time to join those two parts of your life together. You can abflug by purchasing a business aircraft and hiring a pilot who is also a flight instructor. This can be a win-win for everyone. You can kill two birds with one stone by taking flight lessons while also working efficiently at your day job. By combining flight lessons with business trips, you wont have to take additional time off to learn how to fly at night or on weekends, and youll be doing it in your own aircraft, wh ich saves money on flight training in general. You can do it gradually, by riding up front during business trips and learning a thing or two here or there, or you can jump in and study hard and fly a lot and become a pilot relatively quickly so that you can fly yourself places without having to schedule or pay for the flight crew.Being the pilot can have advantages and disadvantages, of course. As the pilot in command, your level of responsibility goes up dramatically and youll no longer be able to just sit back and relax in the cabin.Youll be the one making decisions about flight planning, weather, and the flying of the airplane instead of working on your computer while you ride along. On the other hand, you may find that you enjoy having even more control over your flight schedule, and you might like being the one to make the go or no-go decision. Often times, those who are afraid of flying are more comfortable when theyre at the controls because they know whats happening and theyre in charge of the situation.Whether you become the pilot of your own airplane or just sit in the back and relax, a small business aircraft will save you loads of time and energy. Buying an aircraft for business purposes is a decision that most people do not regret.Interested in becoming your own personal pilot? If youre interested in learning to become a pilot, and you have a small business that would benefit from operating a small aircraft, then the decision should be an easy one. Buy an airplane and hire a flight instructor to fly you around and teach you to fly at the same time. You wont regret it.Operating a business aircraft can save time, and can improve your bottom line. And there are tax benefits, too. But aircraft ownership isnt without its challenges. Airplanes come at a high price tag, and require a sharp degree of attention and focus on the costs and benefits of owning an airplane to make it worth it. A comprehensive financial analysis can tell you if aircraft ownership i s right for your business.

How to Protect Your Online Reputation in the Social Media Age
How to Protect Your Online Reputation in the Social Media Age How to Protect Your Online Reputation in the Social Media Age Mark Cubanrecently did an interview with Inc.on the massivetransformation of digital media andhow personal data is being shared at an alarming rate. The majority of this personal data is collected through social networks and shared with various applications, sites, partners, and mora usually without the end users knowledge.Todd William of ReputationRhino.com agreesthatdata is potentially putting social media users at risk The pressure to share on social media is intense. But oversharing has a number of unforeseen consequences, like the boss discovering you at opening day instead of taking a sick day, your kids asking about those funny-looking cigarettes, or a burglar finding out you are away from home on vacation. Its not just about the sharing of your data its also about what data is being shared, how its being used, and how your past updates, shares, retwee ts, and likes could possibly come back to haunt you.Cuban mentioned that networks are now building personal profiles onevery individual out there based off the data that is already available on the Web. This information is priceless to marketing companies and companies that arehiring. It is completely changing the landscape of technology and the way we live our lives.Re-Examining Your Digital FootprintYour digital footprint is already out there, but its not too late to make it smaller and remove any connections or content out there that could potentially harm you down the road. With the recent news that Google will start indexing Twitter updates within itssearch results, its now more important than ever for individuals to take control over thecontent they have zugnglich and not let their past social media digital footprints potentially harm them in the future. The first step is going through your main social profiles on networks like Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn and doing a manual audit of your updates, pictures, and friend relationships. A manual audit will give you an idea of the type of content youve put out there in the past. By cleaning it up now, you can prevent itfrom harming you in the future. 7 Questions to Ask the Hiring Manager During a Job Interview
7 Questions to Ask the Hiring Manager During a Job Interview 7 Questions to Ask the Hiring Manager During a Job Interview Its a common scenario for a lot of job candidates. You wrap up a job interview feeling great about how you represented yourself and confident that the position is yours. But two steps out the door, it hits you: you forgot to ask the hiring manager a question. Even worse, it was the key question that would have given you a vital piece of information about the job while also solidifying you as a top candidate in her mind. Theres no going back to fix that mistake, but you can try to avoid repeating it in the future. Here are seven questions you should definitely remember to ask the hiring manager during future job interviews: 1. Have I answered all of the questions you had for me? This may seem strange, but its a good place to start. Sometimes the hiring manager will state that she doesnt have anything else to ask, but other times she may want clarification on one of your previous answers. If you get confirmation that youve provided the information she needs, you will feel comfortable moving on with your other questions. 2. If Im hired, what are the three most important things you will want me to accomplish during my first six months at the company? Asking this interview question helps you in several ways. First, it shows confidence, as youre clearly looking ahead to what youll do in the position for which you have just interviewed. Second, it shows that you know the company is hiring someone because it has a need that must be filled, and that you believe you can fill it. And finally, it sets expectations for both you and the manager if you do, indeed, get hired. 3. How would you describe the companys culture? What kinds of people fit best with that culture? When youre looking for work, youre usually hoping for more than just a paycheck. Even if the role for which youre applying seems to be a perfect match to your skills, you could end up miserable if the company doesnt offer the flexibility you desire, encourages micromanagement by its supervisors, or otherwise creates a dreary and unwelcoming work environment. Its important to find a good cultural fit, so dont forget to ask about it. 4. What do you like most about working for this company? What is your favorite part of your job? Along with the question about the corporate culture, this is one that may give you more insight into how people feel about the company. If the hiring manager is quickly able to outline several great aspects of her job, and those resonate with you, youve probably identified a good fit. If she struggles to name something she enjoys, that also may give you a clue regarding the work environment. 5. What is the companys career development plan? How does it encourage further education and growth for its workers? It makes sense to look ahead even in the interview phase. If you do land a position with this business, you want to make sure its not a dead-end job. Its important to know whether your potential new employer is genuinely committed to helping employees progress in their careers. If the hiring manager is vague about such development or skirts the question, you may want to look elsewhere. 6. Is there anything I have said that makes you doubt I would be a great fit for this position? This can be a scary question to ask, as noted in an article from TopResume. However, if you have the courage to ask this, you stand to gain a better sense of the next steps in the process and an opportunity to address any reservations that the hiring manager might have about your candidacy while you still have his or her attention. 7. What are the next steps in the process? What is your timeline for making an offer to the successful candidate? A good hiring manager will probably address this without you having to ask, but if she doesnt, make sure you get a good handle on the post-interview process. Youll want to know what kind of follow-up questions to expect, whether additional interviews are likely for finalists, and even if youll be expected to complete a skills test of some kind. Dont be afraid to ask for specifics. You may not have time to ask all seven of these questions. But if you at least have them in mind, you should be able to wrap up your interview with no regrets, feeling that you sought all of the information youll need to make the right decision if you are offered the job. 4 ways to calm your nerves when you have to meet with your supervisor
4 ways to calm your nerves when you have to meet with your supervisor 4 ways to calm your nerves when you have to meet with your supervisor Your supervisor doesnât have to act like a bully for you to feel anxious during meetings. Sometimes, just the thought of having to sit in front of your boss can be terrifying. Hereâs how to deal with nerves when a meeting with him or her is on the books.Let your enthusiasm take overGreatist features advice from Gail Saltz, M.D., a psychiatry professor at New York-Presbyterian Hospital, who recommends thinking of certain things to enhance how your feel:âThink: âI feel amped up because Iâm going to go in and kill this meeting,â or âMy boss is going to be really impressed.â She also recommends writing down these positive affirmations. âTo some degree, youâre forcing yourself into a positive scenario, but even if you donât fully believe yourself, youâll help transition your nerves into excited energy.â âMake sure youâre well-versed in different conceptsJohn Baldoni, an author, leadership consultant, speaker and coach, writes in the Harvard Business Review a bout how managers can make âsmall talk with bigwigs.â One of his top tips is to go in prepared, which is something you can do before having a meeting with your own supervisor:âLearn the issues the senior team is focused on. Ideally everyone in the company should know the strategic priorities. Bone up on these so you know them, too. Think in advance what you will say to a senior person if you meet her in person. Work out a key message about your projects, your career and yourself. This is good practice whether you meet a senior person or not. Finally, if itâs a more social meeting, you might try to learn of a bossâs personal interests - hobbies, sports he or she likes, or their volunteer activities.âDonât put your supervisor on too high of a pedestalTry not to overdo it. HubSpotâs Director of Content, Corey Wainwright, says in an article about overcoming awkwardness around supervisors, that you should not take your assumptions about their behavior too far:âIf the y respond awkwardly from time to time, donât read into it. They couldâve just come from a stressful conversation. They could be distracted. Or maybe they just slept poorly last night. Push past those instances and donât let the awkwardness build on itself.âWhen it doubt, revert the discussion to the work at handDeborah Hankin, VP of talent at consulting firm SYPartners, told Monster what to do during awkward situations with your supervisor:âWhen those awkward moments do happen, itâs appropriate to go back to confidently asking innocuous questions about the business at hand such as, âWhen do you think we may hear back from so and so?â and âWhat are the next steps you see for this assignment?â â

Learn to successfully ask for and process advice
Learn to successfully ask for and process advice Learn to successfully ask for and process advice No matter how much of an expert of you are in your chosen career, sometimes you need outside perspective. Iâm endlessly surprised though, at who people choose to rely on though; even more so when they pose very specific or sensitive questions to their social networks. For one thing, you never really know who your true friends or lurking frenemies are and whether their advice will be designed to help or hinder your goals. For another, random advice and conflicting ideas can cloud your journey instead of clarifying it. So, what should you do if you need help trying to figure something out?Create a trusted communityInstead of posting extremely personal details into the ether, figure out a way to present it only to the best and most potential helpful group. Alice Labaton, the founder of MyMakeupBrushes comes from an extremely tightknit, in some ways isolated community that has been hugely influential in every aspect of her life. For that reason, when starting her business, she âwas al ways looking for some sense of community. I felt like I was failing in the entrepreneur community.â On the flipside, when tapping into her existing community, she said: âI felt that some of the people I encountered werenât the right people because they werenât of the world.âLabaton joined various entrepreneurial ventures and searched until she felt she found one with a âsafe environment, where you can ask any question at any given time.â Sheâs currently president of an accountability group made up of a small circle of trusted like-minded entrepreneurs. âItâs four or five people. Weâre very open. Weâre all here for the same purpose. If you feel youâre falling short, weâll help.âUse your own filterEven in an extremely trusted group - and even if youâre the one in charge, itâs important to stay true to your own goals and specific needs. âIn todayâs highly sensitive environment, itâs important that leaders specifically solicit, listen to, and be grateful for diverse opinions,â said Deloitte principal Joni Swedlund. Especially âsince we apply our own filters to any situations.â It doesnât matter what stage or position youâre at, trust your gut overall.Know your valueHereâs the thing, when you ask for advice, you admit vulnerability and show others that you canât or choose not to do it all on your own. âIt took me maybe five years to be confident in being an entrepreneur,â said Labaton. âSome people own it from day one. It took me time to get there. I was proud of myself, I just didnât know how to accept praise - this is a good thing, this is who I am, this is what I do.âIt wasnât until she started trying to promote her business that Labaton finally realized sheâd been going about it all wrong. âI watched myself on video - I was blushing and stammering.â At one point she realized âIâm amazing, my product is amazing.â Labaton was challenged to create a new elevator pitch, and the more sh e heard it, the more she believed it. When she asks for advice now it isnât born of insecurity, but rather soliciting input to help move her company forward.Maintain perspectiveWhen receiving advice from others, Swedlund believes that even those in leadership positions âdo well to maintain perspective in determining what types of advice resonate the best.â And it doesnât matter what stage youâre at because letâs face it - ânot all advice is good, let alone wise.â Even if you can glean a nugget of something valuable from someone elseâs input, it will have been worthwhile to ask.Use good advice twiceLabaton was recently approached by a major international corporation for a potential partnership. âI know Iâm good enough, but theyâre pushing me to do something I want to do that I wouldnât have done.â Labaton sought advice from friends and colleagues in various careers to understand how best to proceed. Even if it doesnât work out, she knows the next one wi ll. âIâm making this viable so that when the next company comes to me, Iâm ready.âSay thank youIf someone ends up giving you valuable advice, follow up and let them know how it went. Swedlund says âDonât forget the importance of thanking your colleagues both personally and publicly for their counsel.â It both validates their input and gives them credit for their insights. It also makes them more inclined to help out the next time around.

3 Things You Need to Building Your Personal Brand
3 Things You Need to Building Your Personal Brand 3 Things You Need to Building Your Personal Brand When it comes to building your personal brand, its all about the like, know, trust factor. Thats how you build an online presence in a way that gets you noticed in the big, wide world as the go-to person within your particular niche, field, or industry. So, lets get to the basics of building the like, know, trust factor: 1. The Know The know part of this factor is literally just that: People have to know that you exist. You may be great at your job, but if your reputation does not transcend the four walls of where you work, how will you get your message out there? That is the first lesson: You absolutely need to be visible. You may have noticed that I always end my post and emails with Get Noticed, Get Hired. This is the reason for my catchphrase. Its extremely difficult to get a job without someone noticing you. For the introverts out there, this may all sound very scary, but it doesnt need to be. There are plenty of ways to do this without having to attend networking and face-to-face meetings. We are not trying to be Kim Kardashian here. No reality show is needed! However, people will need to know that you exist. Think about it: If they dont know of you, how can they think of you when the right opportunity comes along? 2. The Like Then we move on to the like piece. Lets start with the fact that youre never going to please or be liked by everyone. Thats okay â" you dont need to be. That being said, I will point out that in getting yourself noticed, I do not mean that you need to be controversial. Getting yourself noticed is about sharing your expertise so that people realize that you know what youre talking about. Clients often tell me that theyre not outwardly driven to talk about themselves, but the thing is, your experience is a great thing to write about. People spend half their lives trawling the internet for advice from people who have had similar experiences. By sharing your own struggles, thoughts, and opinions â" i.e., what you learned when you did X, Y, and Z; or what you wished you had known back then â" you can become someone who helps others. Youre not just someone bragging about yourself! See the difference? 3. The Trust Finally, we come to the trust factor, which only comes into play with consistency. You do not want to be a one-hit wonder. You need to be consistent. If people begin to follow you and then you go off the radar for six weeks, you will soon fade into oblivion and new people will take your place. Acquiring trust is a slow process. However, trust me when I say consistency wins every time, hands down. This is where most people fail. If you have a lot of time constraints, you dont need to do all of this yourself; there are people who can help you to manage your online presence. Why Bother With a Personal Brand? So, why should you do all this? In a nutshell: It will get you noticed, and it will get you hired. You need to become the go-to person in your particular field or industry. This is not geographically dependent, and regardless of where you currently work or where you want to work, you can maintain your brand and build on it. I am living proof of this: I have managed to build my own message and spread it way beyond the four walls of where I live. I now have followers across the world in countries such as Macau, Germany, Holland, the US, Canada, the UK, the United Arab Emirates, and more! Oh, and finally, my global following has allowed me to move to another country. I am able to work from anywhere I choose in the world! As a result, I have recently traded the four walls of my office in London (left) for this outdoor office in Spain (right)! I love the hammock! Although you may not share my dream of moving someplace sunny, building your brand still has many benefits. One of the biggest ones: You will always have clients or companies chasing you! So, if you ask me if its worth doing, I think you know the answer. Get Noticed, Get Hired. Susan Burke is an award-winning global careers coach. How to Create Goals for a Performance Review - The Muse
How to Create Goals for a Performance Review - The Muse How to Create Goals for a Performance Review Hi Kyle, Iâm an executive assistant. Most would say this position doesnât have any goals, but our performance review system requires me to set goals. How do I go about this? Signed, Goal-Seeker Hi Goal-Seeker, Goals are in place to help us take care of business as usual, sure, but theyâre also intended to challenge us to grow as professionals and advance in our careers. Everyone has them, no matter the position. I get that working in an open-ended role such as yours that maybe doesnât provide you with clear measures of success in the way that âgrow sales quota by 11%â does may make it difficult to come up with an obvious answer. Thereâs no doubt that demonstrating your value at work is daunting when your role feels very day-to-day. But, since all roles can be performed with an intent to succeed, there's a straightforward way to go about creating goals that'll both please your manager and get you ahead. Find Things That Can Be Improved Finding areas of improvement in your current role is a great way to get started. You may find there are issues in the form of scalability, communication, or the number of steps it takes to complete a daily task. For example, as an EA, letâs say you assist three executives with their scheduling, and you're not thrilled with how their calendars are organized. Is there a system you could implement to streamline things and make the schedules more digestible? If so, this is how the goals might look on paper: Re-organize internal meetings to occur on the same day each week Utilize a calendar application, like Calendly, to streamline one-off meeting requests Establish flexible blocks of time to be updated with minimal notice, reducing conflicts Consider the Long Game Think about what you want out of your career. Even if youâre not a five-year plan person, look ahead to your future, and ask yourself what you see yourself doing. Whatâs your title? Your salary range? Do you have another degree? Are you managing others? Now, what will it take you to ultimately get there? These larger career goals arenât meant to be accomplished overnight (or lead to conversations with your manager in which he or she thinks youâre trying to steal their role); rather, they exist to help you figure out what you can be doing today thatâll get you where you want to be in a year or two. Basically, once you know the long-term plan, you can break it into baby steps. The long-term plan stays in your head, the baby steps turn into the goals you share with your manager. It could look as simple as this: Present plan to eliminate bottleneck systems for overall efficiency Connect with every department to assess needs for new tools and systems Create email templates for various scenarios for faster response times Take on New Responsibilities If youâve noticed a particular person or team struggling with their workload, there may be an opportunity to absorb new responsibilities and increase your workplace value. If youâre already handling travel for executives, could you handle it for another team as well? If you like this idea, but youâre having trouble finding new responsibilities, talk to your manager. Work with him to find out what pain points you can relieve by taking them off of his plate- and make that a goal in and of itself. It might look like this: Own post-meeting communication Build out consistent onboarding process across departments Find ways to improve my bossâ day-to-day (you can elaborate on this as you figure out what will help) When it comes to setting goals, we often start out ambitious and then lose steam as time goes on, which is why itâs important to think of truly actionable tasks. The items shouldnât be things you can just check a box on, but itâs OK if they seem sort of simple. After all, if you overshoot, youâre more likely to give up. But really, no matter what kind of position you have, thereâs a way to define and refine your performance in a way that allows you to further the companyâs mission and your own career growth. This article is part of our Ask an Expert series- a column dedicated to helping you tackle your biggest career concerns. Our experts are excited to answer all of your burning questions, and you can submit one by emailing us at editor(at)themuse(dot)com and using Ask a Credible Career Coach in the subject line. Risk Measurement and Assessment
Risk Measurement and Assessment Risk Measurement and Assessment Spurred by the financial crisis of late 2008, risk management has experienced increased importance and prominence as a function within the financial services industry. Accordingly, familiarity with the basic methodologies for measuring, assessing and controlling risk is vital for those wishing to get ahead in finance. Here we present a quick primer on key concepts in this field. Money at Risk The crudest, yet most conservative, measurement of risk is the total sum of money invested or loaned. The worst possible outcome is that the entire investment becomes worthless or that the borrower defaults. A refinement is the introduction of probabilities to the analysis, but often doing requires a number of assumptions that are not strictly amenable to precise measurement. See our explanation of Monte Carlo simulations. Limitations on the size of positions that can be held by securities traders or the amount of funds that loan officers can extend to a given borrower are, essentially, applications of this same risk reduction strategy. Volatility and Variability These are common measures of risk with respect to publicly-traded securities and classes of securities. Historical data can be mined to make assessments of possible future price movements, in light of past fluctuations in price. Risk measurement with respect to individual securities and classes of securities is frequently put in the context of correlations between them, among them, and with reference to broader economic indicators. Much of modern portfolio theory, for example, involves developing strategies to reduce the amplitude of aggregate price fluctuations in an investment portfolio by selecting a mix of investments whose individual prices tend to be either uncorrelated or, better yet, to be negatively correlated (that is, their prices tend to move in opposite directions, with one being up when the other is down, and vice versa). It has applications for financial advisors, money managers, and financial planners. Predictive Power of History The standard legal boilerplate on investment prospectuses cautions that past performance is no guarantee of future results. Likewise, correlations and statistical relationships measured in some historical period offer only imperfect indications of what the future may hold for the same security or class of securities. Extrapolating historical trends and relationships into the future thus should be done with extreme caution. Counter-Party Risk Counterparty risk is the risk that the other party to a transaction, such as another firm in the financial services industry, will prove unable to fulfill its obligations on time. Examples of these obligations include delivering securities or cash to settle trades and repaying short-term loans as scheduled. Assessments of counterparty risk often are made based on the analyses of companies financial strength provided by rating agencies. However, as the financial crisis of late 2008 demonstrated, the methodologies used by the rating agencies are deeply flawed (as are consumer FICO scores) and subject to grave error. Additionally, in a general financial panic, events can spiral out of control very swiftly, and small counterparty failures can rapidly accumulate to the point where large firms with supposedly ample financial cushions are rendered insolvent. Lehman Brothers, Merrill Lynch, and Wachovia were such casualties of the 2008 crisis; the first went out of business, and the others were acquired by stronger firms.? A large part of the problem with assessing counterparty risk is that the analyses performed by rating agencies are not dynamic enough. They typically adjust to new realities only relatively slowly. Furthermore, once a counterparty that previously was deemed sound suddenly lurches toward insolvency, it is extremely difficult, if not impossible, to unwind obligations and transactions already entered into under the favorable circumstances that held in the past. The Role of Actuaries Actuaries are most associated with analyzing mortality tables on behalf of life insurance companies, playing a critical part in the setting of premiums on policies and payout schedules on annuities. Actuarial science, as it is often called, is an application of advanced statistical techniques to huge data sets which themselves have high degrees of measurement accuracy. Additionally, the risk assessments made by life insurance actuaries are based on data that is almost completely uncorrelated with the financial system and movements in the financial markets. By contrast, measurements of counterparty risk, the future behavior of investment securities and the outlook for specific business initiatives are not amenable to such precise, scientific analysis. Thus, risk managers (and the management science professionals who lend them quantitative support) probably will never have the ability to develop predictive models that have anywhere near the degree of confidence that one can place in those estimated by a life insurance actuary.

One in five work a dream job  Heres what to do if youre not one of them
One in five work a 'dream job' â" Here's what to do if you're not one of them One in five work a 'dream job' â" Here's what to do if you're not one of them According to a recent SurveyMonkey poll, about one in five Americans say they are working at their dream job. LinkedIn CEO Jeff Weiner posed the questions that resulted in this finding; in his write-up about the poll, the number gets framed as a low number: âOnly 22%â of Americans are already in their dream job.â But this should not discourage you if you are not among this lucky number. Working at your perfect job is a rare achievement. To be completely fulfilled with your work without reservations is a luxury that many Americans do not have. And that is okay. For the majority of workers who are not in dream jobs, here is what you can do in the meantime to make your job good enough:What does a dream job look like? When Weiner asked, âWhat are the most desired jobs in America?â in his poll, âbusiness ownerâ was the most common answer given, suggesting that the autonomy is a desired trait for us. It is one you can start to get even if you are not in the perfect job where you are your own boss. When you have more ownership over your job, you have more sense of control. Dean Burnett, author of âHappy Brain: Where Happiness Comes From, and Why,â writes that feeling responsible for what happens to you helps people feel in control of their lives. When jobs do not have that, we suffer: âYour work can reward you with a sense of control, but it can also provide a loss or lack of control, which can be psychologically harmful, sometimes even clinically so,â he writes. âJobs that strip you of autonomy with strict rules/policies (dress codes, micromanagement, etc.) and/or make you constantly beholden to others (telesales, retail, etc.) are widely regarded as unpleasant and a source of stress.â If you are on the hunt for a more perfect job, look for employers that will give you control over what your workday can look like. Ask interviewers if there is flexibility with where and how the work can be done. And if you want to make your okay job closer to a dream job, you first will need to reflect on what âdreamâ means for you. There are drawbacks to many jobs. Great work schedules may get burdened with bad coworkers, awesome work may get held up by a large companyâs bureaucratic tape. Does a dream job mean more money, better coworkers, or more creative control? Being happy with good enough can expand your definition of what passion can be beyond enjoying everything about your job. Identify areas of learning and development that you would want to pursue in your current job even if these opportunities comes with caveats, management professor Morten Hansen advised Ladders to do: âSee if you can find areas at work where you can do that little by little.â If you want to completely switch careers, look for projects and training classes at your job that can give you the skills you need for the switch. âIf you like learning and development, try to get into some training seminars. ⦠In other words, you start maneuvering yourself. In most jobs, there is some room for maneuvering,â he says. How you think about your job can change how you feel about it. For people without dream jobs, knowing that you have the freedom to maneuver can change how you think about your daily to-do list. If you do not like one particular part of your job, you can work to like another part of it. You can find contentment with good enough. It may even be a relief to not put the pressure of perfection upon yourself to find.
